Squeeze makes light of layoff

Lightly Squeeze made a triumphant return to action at Haydock on Thursday eight months after a severe attack of colic that almost claimed his life.

Full credit for his remarkable comeback goes to the vets & staff at the University of Bristol’s Langford Vets whose skill & care in January helped him pull through when things were looking bleak.

We then gave Lightly Squeeze plenty of time off before he resumed training this summer. He had been going nicely at home over the past month so it was a question of trying to find the right race for him with conditions to suit.

It was tremendous to see him back on a racecourse again and highly encouraging that he should win the Class 5 handicap over just short of a mile and a half with something to spare.

Our assistant Mike Legg was keen to drop him in at the back of the field in the early stages but then found himself in front much sooner than planned more than two furlongs out because the race rather fell apart in the straight.

Mike then sensibly made the best of his way home on Lightly Squeeze who kept on well to beat Mauricio by four lengths.

We will see how he comes out of the race before making plans but one option is to give him another run on the flat before going back over hurdles.

It is fair to say Lightly Squeeze was a bit disappointing on his two starts over hurdles after joining us when Philip Hide handed in his licence.

But he seems to be back on track now and can hopefully kick on this winter.
